Gaston-François is born in the bilingual town of Fribourg-CH in 1939, son of a maxillo-facial surg. After medical school in Fribourg, Zurich & Paris, pregraduate training in surgery in U.K., Swiss & American (ECFMG) M.D, internships in ENT, Dermatology, Great Burns Center, General Surgery, Orthopaedics, made his 1st training in Plastic surg. with Rodolph MEYER, fonder of the ISAPS, in Lausanne. Moved to France again were he got the position of "Interne-Résident étranger des Hôpitaux de Paris" training with Claude Dufourmentel, Roger Mouly, Daniel Marchac, later with Paul Tessier. At the "1st Congrès Franco-Britanique in Deauville"in 1971 he was nominated by the British Association of Plastic Surgeons as "Continental Laureate of the BAPS & British Council" and got a special training in Cannies burn Hospital Glasgow and Northwood Middlessex Hosptal with the most prominent British teachers. Back to Switzerland he became first assistant with Léo Clodius in Zurich, later Chief Resident with Claude Verdan in Lausanne. He was granted the first full title as "Specialist in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery" ever given in Switzerland 1974. 1976 he was University Fellow of the Jackson-Memorial Hospital Miami-Florida and received the teaching of Ralf Millard .He his one of the founders of The Alpine Workshop in Plast. Surg. SINCE 1972. He visited also centers in New-York(John-Marquis Converse at NYU),Chicago Eugène Tardy, Upsalla-Sweden Prof Tord Skoog, MUNICH Heinz Bohmert. Nominated "Privat-Docent"(Associate Professor) in Plastic Surgery Lausanne University in 1977. He teached "Orbito-palpebral surg." during 30 years: 1977 to 2007. He managed also Humanitarian Missions in Iran, Afghanistan, Zaïre(Idjwi-Island at Rwanda-border) for leprosy & different pathologies like clefts.Parallel to the teaching he opened also his private practice and created a "Day-Clinic in Plastic Surgery" He published more than 200 papers in PRS, Brit.J.Plast.Surg, Europ.J, etc., 4 books(3 on orbito-palpebral surg. with Denys Montandon, Serge Morax & Laurence Garey; 1 on reconstructive Breast surg.with D.Montandon & Jean-Louis Goin) and 20 videos films (one on Tram-Flap received the 1st price of the Swiss soc. of Surgery, the on Subcutaneous Mastectomy received the "Davis & Geck" price and the Latissimus dorsi flap got the 1st price at the International Festival on Medical Films in Paris )He was also nominated "Postgraduate Professor of ISAPS". During the period of his Presidency of the Swiss Society of Senology (Breast diseases) he could influence the politics of the Swiss Health Service for the reimbursement of the cost of breast reconstruction and later for the change of broken implants.He was also nominated "Expert" for the commission "Mammary Implants" of "Swissmedics" = Federal Office of Public Health" and participated greatly in the printing of the ad hoc Swiss Report. He was also swiss representative Expert at the European & ISO commissions for implants during 12 years of the "silicone crisis". Afraid from the numerous ski-accidents during the Alpine WS, with friends & colleagues he founded in 1989 the St.Andrews Workshop in Plastic Surgery combining Golf & Science: this lasted 10 years.He joined the ICAPS from the beginning in 1999,when Tom Roberts, Goswin v. Mallinkrodt, Chris. Wolfensberger & Bernard Cornette de St. Cyr decided to create a new concept including culture.
He retired from medical activity in 2007 but remains enthusiastic about the specialty and his teaching.
